Sam’s Club and Costco members upset about upcoming changes

Shoppers love Sam’s Club and Costco for their wide variety of items, low prices, and deep discounts on bulk purchases.

But both chains have just announced major changes that have left some long-time customers very dissatisfied.

According to trade publication Retail Wire, Sam’s Club quietly made changes to its membership contract this summer.

The report states:

  • Members must pay an additional $60 per year for a premium membership if they want to access the stores between 8 and 10 a.m. to avoid the crowds.
  • In addition, the minimum order value for free shipping is now $50: previously, shipping on almost all items was free, even items costing only $5 or $10.

Sam’s Club member Tom Hoffsteder said that while he loves the store, he has no intention of paying extra for perks.
“I just heard about it,” he said as he loaded his car, “but we just renewed the basic membership.”

Some Sam’s members are also upset about a new introductory offer that lets new customers join for just $25 – half price.

The $25 offer is not valid for existing members.

But is Costco the better deal?

Some Sam’s members said on social media that they are considering switching to Costco.

However, this may not result in savings.

Costco just announced that its membership fees will increase from $60 to $65 in September. This is the first increase in 7 years. The basic membership was already $10 more expensive than Sam’s.

In addition, Costco now requires its members to scan their Costco card when they enter the store to reduce the number of unauthorized purchases.

Amy Crouch has tried big-box stores, but says she’s happy shopping at Walmart because she doesn’t see the need for membership fees at all.

“I’m not a fan of having to pay for it,” she said. “No, not necessarily.”

In the meantime, Sam’s Changes will go into effect on August 19, so if you want free shipping on some smaller items, you might want to buy them in the next few weeks so you don’t waste your money. That way, you won’t waste your money.
