Western Michigan Men’s Basketball promotes Chris Fowler to assistant head coach

Western Michigan University and head coach of the men’s basketball team Dwayne Stephens have promoted Chris Fowler from assistant coach to associate head coach of the program.

“Chris is an incredible addition to our program,” said Coach Stephens. “Over the last two years, he has played an integral role in laying the foundation for what we want our program to build upon. He impacts our program in every area – from his leadership skills to developing young men to the X’s and O’s, Chris is exceptional in many ways. His future is bright and we look forward to the continued impact Chris will have on our program in his new role as associate head coach.”

In Fowler’s second season with the program, Western Michigan increased its total number of conference wins by five from the previous season. The Broncos finished sixth in the MAC standings and made their first MAC Tournament appearance in Cleveland since the 2016-17 season. Along the way, WMU won its first nonconference event since 2013 by winning its bracket of the Emerald Coast Classic in Niceville, Florida, and set single-game program records for points (127), three-pointers made (18) and assists (34) in its final preparation before MAC play.

In his first season, WMU made 250 three-pointers, which was then the second-highest single-season point total in program history. The Broncos followed that up with 253 more three-pointers in the 2023-24 season, setting a new second-best record in team history. Western Michigan has also led the MAC in offensive rebounding in each of his two seasons on the sidelines.

Thanks to Fowler’s help in developing Western Michigan, several backcourt players received conference honors during his tenure. Last season JaVaughn Hannah became only the third player in program history to be named MAC Sixth Man of the Year. Each season, a Bronco guard also received honorable mention on the All-MAC list, with Lamar Norman Jr. earning the honor in the 2022-23 season after becoming the 45th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points for the Brown and Gold.

Off the field, the Broncos have also improved their performance in the classroom, setting a new program record with a 3.41 grade point average for the 2023-24 academic year.

“I want to thank Coach Stephens for the opportunity to become the associate head coach,” Fowler said. “I am honored to be a part of this program and this team. I look forward to continuing to make an impact on our student-athletes on and off the field in this new role as we continue to work toward becoming MAC champions.”
