Martin Lawrence to produce “Martin” prequel drama series

Lovers of 90s television will soon be able to tune in to another revived favorite!

Martin LawrenceStar of the successful sitcom Martinis set to executive produce a one-hour prequel drama series about his popular character Martin Payne. The project, aptly titled The young Martinis a collaboration between the Bad Boys Actor production company RunTelDat and Marvin Pearts WonderHill Studios. According to a synopsis from Deadline, the show is a

“Contemporary origin story that revolves around Martin Payne, a charismatic teenager navigating the complexities of the transition from adolescence to adulthood. It reinterprets the character of Martin, played by Lawrence, and pays tribute to the original series.”

The young Martin addresses topics such as family, friendship and life from the perspective of the young Martin Payne. WonderHill CEO Marvin Peart praised the project and said

“Of all the hit shows of the 90s, there was only one Martin – a show that defined culture and positivity. Martin reflected a real group of friends from our community that was seen on television screens around the world.”

He added,

“I respect and admire Martin Lawrence for his creation of Martin Payne and for what he did in front of and behind the camera for African Americans on television. In many ways, he influenced my path in the entertainment industry and it is an honor to work with Martin and his younger self and share him with the next generation of fans.”

Martin Lawrence is not the only entertainer whose comedy show is returning as a drama. As you may remember, Will Smith’s Fresh Prince of Bel Air was relaunched in 2022. The redesigned version, Bel Airquickly became a hit and the third season is scheduled to premiere on August 15, 2024.
