Martin Lawrence is working on the “Martin” prequel spin-off series “Young Martin”

One of the most popular sitcoms of all time starts a new chapter. Martin is set to receive an official prequel series, supported by Martin Lawrence himself.

Deadline reports that the upcoming drama is in the works courtesy of Lawrence’s production company RunTelDat in association with Marvin Peart’s WonderHill Studios. The young MartinThe hour-long series tells the “origin story of Martin Payne, a charismatic teenager navigating the complexities of the transition from adolescence to adulthood,” according to the outlet.

The young Martin is produced by Lawrence, Rae Proctor, Robert Lawrence and Stacy Lyles of RunTelDat, with Bob Yari, David McPherson, Rosa Peart and Greg Martin for WonderHill Studios. The show is set in modern-day Detroit as young Martin struggles through situations involving family, friends and his ambitions.

The cult sitcom ran for five seasons on Fox from August 27, 1992 to May 1, 1997. It won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite New Comedy Series on Television in 1993 and secured three wins at the NAACP Image Awards between 1994 and 1995.

Last, Martin Fans were treated to a cast reunion at the 2024 Emmy Awards. On January 15, Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, Tichina Arnold and Carl Anthony Payne II gathered onstage at the ceremony, while the late Thomas Mikal Ford was honored with a photo included in the set.

Martin Lawrence was busy throughout 2024. The year began for him and his co-star Will Smith with full steam ahead for the Bad Boys: Ride Or Die Press tour. The film premiered on June 7 and became the eighth highest-grossing film of 2024, grossing $179.1 million in the United States and Canada and $183.7 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $362.7 million.

The 59-year-old star also announced his comedy tour, “Y’all Know What It Is,” which kicks off in Chandler, Arizona on July 19. The full list of dates can be found below.
