“The Killers” show last minutes of England’s European Championship match for O2 audience

US band The Killers played their way into the hearts of English fans on Wednesday evening by broadcasting the last five minutes of the European Championship semi-final during their performance at the O2 Arena.

After England’s national football team took a 2-1 lead against the Netherlands thanks to a last-minute goal from Ollie Watkins, securing their place in the final of the tournament, The Killers stopped their performance a few minutes before the final whistle. When the game finally ended, the arena was filled with cheers as red and white confetti shot from the stage and the musicians played the global hit “Mr Brightside”.

The song is hugely popular in the UK and has become a regular club hit – some even refer to it as the country’s unofficial “national anthem”. Sky reporter Martin Kimber wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Probably the most electrifying moment of my life. When The Killers live stream the Euros just before England win and they surprise us with Mr Brightside.”

Another fan in attendance said: “If you ever get the chance to watch England get to the final of the European Championships (and) then sing the British national anthem in an arena of 15,000 people, I highly recommend it. Absolute perfection from The Killers.”

After the event, the band wrote on social media platforms: “Tonight we played for England!”

England face Spain in the final of the UEFA European Football Championship on Sunday evening. It could be a momentous victory for fans who have long waited for a tournament trophy. The defeat in the 2021 final against Italy is still a bitter loss.
