“Have you ever dreamed of a better version of yourself? Younger? More beautiful? More perfect?” asks the new teaser for “The Substance” starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid.

Mubi’s fast-paced teaser is set to bass-heavy music and consists of a sequence of shots that alternate between scenes of Moore and other characters appearing content and shots of misery, including one of Moore lying on the ground screaming in pain and a car crash.

The focus of the teaser is a green substance that flashes several times on the screen and has the word “ACTIVATOR” written on the label.

At one point, Quaid plays with the theme of image distortion when he stands in front of a group of onlookers in an orange suit and shouts: “Pretty girls should always smile!”

This line is juxtaposed with shots of Qualley with blood on her face and Moore smearing lipstick on her face. The full teaser for the film can be found here.

“The Substance,” which won the Best Screenplay award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, was directed by Coralie Fargeat.

“Have you ever dreamed of a better version of yourself? You. Only better in every way. You should try this new product, The Substance. IT CHANGED MY LIFE,” says a vague synopsis of the film.

“The Substance” will be released in theaters on September 20th.
