Michigan woman scammed out of ,000 after man posing as deputy sheriff claimed there was a warrant out for her arrest

(CBS-DETROIT) – A Michigan woman was scammed out of over $13,500 after a man posing as a deputy sheriff called her and told her there was a warrant out for her arrest and she had to pay the money or officers would come to her home and arrest her, authorities said.

According to Troy police officers, a resident received a voicemail earlier this month from a man claiming to be an Oakland County deputy.

She called the number back and the man told her there was a warrant out for her arrest for failing to appear for a court date. He said if she didn’t pay $16,500, she would be arrested at home.

The victim told police she was skeptical, but the scammer convinced her the situation was real by calling her back and showing the caller ID as being from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

He also faxed her something that looked like an arrest warrant with her name on it.

The woman was then transferred to a second person who pretended to be a lieutenant. This second scammer asked the victim to wire him money to cover the alleged bail amount.

They convinced the woman to wire them $13,500.

After the incident, the woman contacted her attorney, who advised her to contact the sheriff’s office and the court directly.

Both confirmed that the people they had spoken to were scammers.
