Although Saweetie has a long list of famous relatives, but she owes her success entirely to hard work and talent – as she made clear in June. On Wednesday night (July 10), the “Tap In” hitmaker stopped by Lil Yachty’s podcast “A Safe Place,” where she was asked about her “interesting family tree.”

The West Coast rapper mentioned some of her more well-known family connections, such as her father’s cousin Gabrielle Union and former San Francisco 49ers player Willie Harper being her grandfather, but she also revealed details about some rarely discussed facts.

“My uncles, we grew up in the same church as (Zaytoven) and his family, so we became a family through (the Lord). My dad was one of MC Hammer’s bodyguards, and MC Hammer — so Uncle Stan — his family joined my grandmother’s church,” Saweetie explained. “Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see my grandfather play football because when I got older, he had already become a pastor.”

She added, “I feel like the church brought a lot of our families together.” The California native later spoke about how many of her relatives didn’t even know she was a musician until records like “ICY GRL” and “My typ“ began to take off.

“They came up to me and said, ‘Why didn’t you tell me you were making music? If you need me, I’m here.’ So no, (they didn’t help me). I’ve always been very self-sufficient, but I know I’ll get help if I need it,” the artist explained.

Saweetie’s comments about her family came weeks after a viral incident in which someone on Twitter accused her of being a “nepo baby.” She quickly refuted the claims: “This is a slap in the face to the child who grew up barely spending time with her parents because they were too busy slaving away and making ends meet.”

On the musical side, Saweetie started “NANi” in May. Her previous singles in 2024 included “Richtivities” and “Khutti”.
