What I love about studios that hire professional actors is that often they just don’t know the game at hand. That’s exactly the case with Robert Charles Lintern, the voice behind Igon’s tormented character.

Having recently played Thomas Chamberlain in the BBC drama Silent witnessElden Ring was Lintern’s first foray into the world of gaming. He had never heard of Hidetaka Miyazaki—a sentence rarely written by games journalists—although “his status was very clear right away,” Lintern said in a recent interview with IGN.

“I’ve never been a voice actor in the gaming world, never been used, never tried to be used, and never even thought I could be a voice actor,” says Lintern. The voice actor also had no idea what Igon looked like, the cult status he had achieved, or the story behind his character. In fact, he had to ask his interviewer to explain the character to him directly.

And I don’t think I even knew Bayle was a dragon at the time. I thought maybe Bayle was a person. Anyway, I can’t remember, but I give as much as I can, vocally, emotionally, with neck stretching, vocal cords tearing, everything. And then we came back, and then there was silence again, during which I drank a glass of water. And then we came back and did it again, with a touch of sadness or with a touch of more anger or slower or faster or whatever it was.

Listening to Igon’s lines again, I wonder if “the pain” he speaks of is not only due to his misery at the hands of Bayle, but also to Lintern’s misery at the hands of Miyazaki.

The director of Elden Ring wanted it to “explode,” and from the sounds of it, that’s exactly what he did. It’s quite amusing to hear Lintern’s experience working on Elden Ring. Realizing that it’s such a monumental work of art, recognizing the aura of Miyazaki, and making Igon a believable character despite knowing nothing but his name.
