Chris Rock’s risky question to Kelly Ripa before welcoming her daughter

Chris Rock’s risky question to Kelly Ripa before welcoming her daughter

After seeing an incredible amount of baby name drama on Reddit’s “Am I the Asshole?” subreddit, we’re of the firm belief that no one gets to claim a baby name as their own. And honestly, it’s probably best if you don’t share your baby naming plans until after the baby is born. (Most people will have the decency to keep negative thoughts to themselves once the baby arrives.) And so we cringed when we heard what comedian Chris Rock asked Kelly Ripa before welcoming his daughter.

In a recent episode of Live with Kelly and MarkRipa, her husband Mark Consuelos and their co-hosts talked about the rules of choosing a nickname, per Entertainment tonight.

“There’s a very funny story,” Ripa said. “Chris Rock called me when he was expecting his first daughter. I had just had (my daughter) Lola – and he said, ‘Listen, (my wife) Malaak and I are thinking about naming the baby Lola, and we just want to check with you to see if that’s OK.'”

And while the All my children The actress may find this funny, but we think it’s pretty damn risky.

“I was like, ‘First of all, I don’t own the name Lola, I didn’t trademark it,'” Ripa said. And we’re sure Rock breathed a sigh of relief. Because what was he supposed to do if Ripa said no? What was the plan B? It may have seemed polite, but we think he should have just gone with it. Whatever some Redditors would have you believe, Ripa is right. The name is not trademarked.

Fortunately for Rock and his now ex-wife, she was not only polite but also flattering. “And secondly, we all agree that Lola Rock is a great name,” she added. “As in, ‘Do you mind if I change Lola’s last name to Rock?'”

It seems the celebrities haven’t agreed on the names of their other children, and we think that’s totally fine. In addition to 23-year-old Lola, Ripa and Consuelos also have sons Michael, 27, and Joaquin, 21. Rock and Malaak Compton have daughters Lola, 22, and Zahra, 20.

When speaking with she knows Last fall, Ripa and Consuelos admitted they don’t always get it right with their kids. (I mean…who does?) “Our daughter came to visit us at work yesterday and said, ‘Please don’t show me on camera,’ and within two minutes we were showing her on camera,” Consuelos said.

“We didn’t want to show her on camera, we started talking to her and the camera panned to her, so it wasn’t really our fault,” Ripa stressed. “It was our fault,” Consuelos joked, admitting defeat.
