Cause of death of former MLB infielder Sean Burroughs announced

Former MLB infielder Sean Burroughs died of fentanyl poisoning when he was found in his vehicle on a California baseball field in May, the Los Angeles County coroner said Wednesday.

The coroner concluded that Burroughs’ death was an accident.

On May 9, Burroughs was found unconscious next to his car shortly after dropping off his son, Knox, for a Little League baseball game, said Doug Wittman, president of the Little League of Long Beach. Efforts to resuscitate Burroughs were unsuccessful.

The 43-year-old was the son of former major league outfielder Jeff Burroughs. He was the star of Long Beach’s Little League team in 1992 and 1993. The team won the Little League World Series in both years – in 1992 it was determined that the opponent was using players who were too old. In 1993 he threw two consecutive no-hitters and helped his team win consecutive titles.

The San Diego Padres selected Burroughs with the No. 9 overall pick in the 1998 MLB Draft. He quickly developed into a star hitter in the Padres’ farm system and was named MVP of the MLB All-Star Futures Games, as well as helping Team USA to a gold medal at the 2000 Olympics.

From 2002 to 2005, he played four seasons with the Padres before being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays. He played in the Major Leagues with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Minnesota Twins until 2012.

Burroughs played in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in 2023 and in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball for the Bridgeport Bluefish and Long Island Ducks.

In 2011, he admitted to ESPN that he suffered from drug problems.

“I just didn’t have the drive or the passion,” Burroughs said at the time. “I was physically and mentally exhausted. It just wasn’t there. I was emotionally drained. I still loved the game and respected it, but I didn’t have the drive to go to the park every day. I kind of lost the desire.”
