The Potlatch Club of the Bahamas is restored to its former glory

The Potlatch Club of the Bahamas is restored to its former glory

The Bahamas island of Eleuthera, known for its wild beauty and 135 pristine beaches, has opened its first luxury boutique hotel.

A popular private home among New York’s celebrities in the 1960s and 1970s, the 11-room property fell into disrepair in the 1980s and has now been revamped under its original name: The Potlatch Club.

Potlatch Club Bahamas VillaThe term potlatch comes from a ceremonial festival of Native Americans in the Northwest in which possessions are destroyed or given away to show off wealth. This was the club’s original modus operandi.

The Potlatch Club emerges after seven years of renovation

Owners Bruce Loshusan and Hans Febles stumbled upon the dilapidated property by chance in 2016, and after a seven-year renovation, the iconic mid-century building has been restored to its former glory. Febles was responsible for the landscaping and design along with Nassau-based interior designer Amanda Lindroth.

Located on seven miles of pink sand beach, the hotel combines coastal elegance with timeless Caribbean architecture. The clubhouse’s original historic details, such as checkered floors and classic whitewashed arches, are reminiscent of its storied past, while striped awnings and pops of pastel color add a new, glamorous touch. White walls, pink coral stone floors, coral stone-clad bathrooms and original artwork complete the relaxed yet upscale beach aesthetic.

Set on 12 acres of landscaped gardens, accommodations are a mix of historic and newly built whitewashed suites, garden cottages, sea view cottages, a one-bedroom villa and a four-bedroom sea view villa that includes butler service. Some have private verandas and terraces, others have gazebos or waterfront gardens.

All accommodations offer easy access to the Fig Tree Restaurant, Pavilion Bar, spa, swimming pool and gym.
