The attack sparked widespread outrage and led to calls for the Western alliance, which has so far shied away from supplying weapons that could escalate the conflict beyond Ukraine, to increase its support.

In a separate interview, Pistorius reiterated his view that German NATO spending was too low.

“In my view, the approach being pursued for next year is too low in terms of what needs to be done and provided in light of the changed times and threat situation,” he told Deutschlandfunk. “I will stick to that.”

Any money not invested in the German army now “could come back to haunt us in the future,” he added.

Earlier this week, Pistorius expressed his disappointment that Germany, which is struggling with a budget crisis due to government spending restrictions, has not pledged more funding for the Bundeswehr.

Pistorius, a member of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s centre-left Social Democrats party, says he wants to increase his military budget, currently at £44 billion, by around £5 billion a year.

Meanwhile, NATO officials said a new defense facility in Poland called “Aegis Ashore,” which can intercept ballistic missiles in the event of a war between NATO and Russia, is now “operational.”
