The Newtown Township Board of Supervisors approved plans for a new indoor pickleball club Wednesday night.

The members-only club will take over the currently vacant Bed, Bath and Beyond store at 20 West Road.

The decision follows an approval recommendation from the Newtown Township Planning Commission last month.

Utah-based Picklr will transform the 30,000-square-foot retail space into a state-of-the-art, members-only pickleball facility with 11 indoor courts.

The Newtown Township location will be The Picklr’s first location in Pennsylvania.

Since opening its first indoor location in 2021, The Picklr has grown rapidly to include 275 locations across the United States.

The planned facility will include professional outdoor surfaces adapted for indoor use, as well as a pro shop and private areas for events. Additional amenities such as locker rooms and showers are designed to enhance the playing experience for members. The club will also offer league play to accommodate the growing community of pickleball fans.

The popularity of pickleball has skyrocketed in recent years and pickleball is considered America’s fastest growing sport.

CNN reported that problems such as injuries, noise pollution from residents and competition for playing times have occurred across the country.
