Bus driver and student injured in Michigan after their vehicle skidded and collided with semi-trailer

(CBS-DETROIT) – A Michigan school bus carrying 11 special needs students skidded and struck a tractor-trailer Wednesday morning, officials said.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., Michigan State Police and Blackman Township patrol officers responded to westbound I-94 near US-127 after receiving a report of an accident involving a Jackson County Intermediate School bus.

Authorities determined that the bus skidded and lost control before colliding with a semi-truck. The semi-truck then struck the median wall and the school bus rolled over on its side.

In addition to the driver, there was also an attendant and eleven students with special needs on the bus, state police said.

According to state police, the bus driver and three students were injured and taken to a local hospital.

The Michigan State Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division will examine the bus and tractor-trailer on Thursday. The wet road and speed both appeared to be factors in the crash, according to state police.

The investigation is ongoing.
