Ariana Grande criticizes double standards towards female actresses after criticism of voice change

Ariana Grande saves her tears in the face of attacks by internet trolls Voice change for a recent clip from her performance on Penn BadgleyThe Podcrushed show went viral on the internet.

In the clip from the June episode, the Grammy winner’s voice seemed to fluctuate from a lower timbre to a higher tone in the middle of the conversation.

The “No Tears Left To Cry” singer has faced heavy criticism on social media in the past for her voice change. She claimed she had her voice changed to play Glinda in the upcoming film “Wicked” and to maintain her “vocal health.”

On Tuesday’s episode of the podcast “Shut Up Evan,” Ariana defended her change in tone, telling host Evan Ross Katz that a voice change is “a normal thing for people to do, especially if they have a wide vocal range.”

The chart-topper attributed her wavering voice to “muscle memory” after years of training to play her role in “Wicked” “every single day.”

“I just spent a lot of time playing a character every day,” she said. “(I) trained my voice for a long time to do different things before I left for London and before all this happened. The voice is in the body, it’s an instrument and muscle memory is a real thing.”

Ariana then criticized the unfair double standards that actresses often face compared to male actors when they change their accents for their film roles.

“With male actors, you see that people always look back and say, ‘Oh, wow! How dedicated he is to his craft. What an incredible transformation! He’s a brilliant performer,'” she said.

“And if, God forbid, I sneeze like Glinda or make an accent (like her), then they just say I’m crazy or ‘someone should check on her.'”

She continued: “After I made that comment (about the change in my voice), I started thinking about how this was still normal, and not just normal, but also: I had a job to do.”

Ariana concluded her response by admitting that it’s “weird to be under so much scrutiny” and to be in the midst of incessant condemnation.

This isn’t the first time Ariana has silenced the internet’s uproar over her voice.

In the comments section of one of the TikTok clips from her appearance on Podcrushed, the singer and actress discussed her vocal range.

“I intentionally change my vocal pitch (high/low) often depending on how much I sing,” the singer commented under a clip from her June interview, which one user captioned “The vocal change??”

“I’ve always done that, BYE,” Ariana added.
