An Inverclyde football club has announced its intention to dissolve after spending almost five decades in Scotland’s amateur leagues.

Inverclyde AFC released a statement online, noting that the decision was made after “lengthy debate and consideration.”

The club stated: “As we have been active in the amateur sector for 49 years, this decision was not taken lightly.

“However, over the past few months it has become increasingly clear that the combination of work, family and other commitments has made it extremely difficult for both players and coaches to continue to compete.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players and coaches, both past and present, who have represented the club over the years.

“Many thanks also to our many sponsors, without whom we would not have been able to survive, let alone thrive.

“Also to the fans who came whatever the weather to support the team and of course the opponents we have played against over the years.

“It is a sad day and of course we are all disappointed, but ultimately we felt that this was the right decision for everyone at this time.

“Perhaps the club will return in the future, but at least for now it is time to call it a day.”

The team won the Scottish AFL Premier League title in 2021/22.
