Former REI manager Chris Speyer joins MEC as Chief Merchandising Officer

Outdoor industry veteran Chris Speyer joins Mountain Equipment Company (MEC), based in Vancouver, British Columbia, as Chief Merchandising Officer (CMO).

Speyer’s seven-year tenure at Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI), most recently as senior vice president, is coming to an end and he will officially join MEC at the end of the month, according to a press release.

Speyer brings 30 years of experience in the outdoor industry that began in Canada. The Ottawa, Ontario native worked at a local store selling skis, bikes and boots and has been a member of the MEC since the 1990s when he lived in Calgary.

“Joining MEC feels like coming home,” Speyer said in a statement. “I remember flipping through the season catalog and being inspired by the amazing photos and gear. Aside from the excitement of returning to Canada, I’m fascinated by how MEC stays true to its founding values. Speyer spoke at last year’s Sea Otter Classic Summit about how REI is appealing to younger, more diverse and less affluent customers. MEC CEO Peter Hlynsky said in a statement that Speyer’s experience and supplier relationships will strengthen the company’s teams and support its next phase of growth.

“Chris is a role model of values ​​and has a real passion for the outdoors, in line with MEC’s ​​core principles,” said Hlynsky. “His remarkable track record of working with multiple brands and growing the private label business will be instrumental in maximizing the potential of MEC’s ​​private labels and continuing to offer members premium ranges at the best value.”

MEC operates 23 stores across Canada.

Speyer is an avid cyclist, skier and trail runner and recently completed the Canyons 50k in Auburn, California.
