A new image of GoPro’s potentially expected Max 2 has surfaced online. Industry leaker Quadro News posted a rather cryptic photo of the action camera with the company’s logo on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter).
Honestly, it doesn’t reveal much and there are no details about specs or possible features, although a lot of information can already be extrapolated from this single image.
There are several reasons why people online think this is the GoPro Max 2. First of all, the lens housing is round. If you look at the company’s current lineup, you’ll notice that all models have rectangular housings, except for the GoPro Max. It’s the outlier with a round ring.
The second reason is the small display under the lens – at least it looks like a display. It is in the same place as the screen on the GoPro Max.
We should also point out that the speaker next to the camera has been eliminated, moving the lens to the center and taking up more space. The GoPro Max 2 could potentially have a larger lens to capture more light, which would allow the device to capture better video in low light than its predecessor.
Cool design
By far the most noticeable change, however, are the distinctive fins that run up and down the device. According to NotebookCheck, these fins are likely the brand’s “improved cooling solution.” The GoPro Max has an overheating issue that’s pretty well documented.
On the official forums, you can find posts from people complaining about their device overheating. One person mentioned that their device shut off after 30 minutes. Apparently, overheating can occur even when the outside temperature is a frosty 10 degrees Celsius.
Cooling fins are an effective way to maintain lower temperatures because their large surface area allows for better heat dissipation. If you open up your computer and look at the heatsink, you will actually see individual metal plates working together to keep the device cool. The same principle applies here.
As with any leak, take this information with a grain of salt. It could change as GoPro may opt for a different cooling method. We know the camera will launch at some point as the model was previously unveiled at X in September 2023.
Not much is officially known about the device, other than that the release has been pushed back to “at least Q4 2024,” so it may be a while before we hear more. In the meantime, you can check out TechRadar’s list of the best action cameras for 2024.
