5 things Taylor Swift said after winning her first award

Taylor Swift is probably the biggest music star in the world right now. She continues to dominate the charts and tours multiple nights in each city she performs in on her “Era’s Tour.” She plays all over the world and sells out stadiums every night.

As she will be giving concerts in Germany in the coming weeks, the mayor announced that during her stay in Gelsenkirchen the city will be renamed “Swiftkirchen”. She will perform in the city whose name she now bears from July 17 to 19.

Swift is also the talk of the tabloids and magazines as she continues her romance with her boyfriend, Super Bowl star Travis Kelce, who is often in the audience and sometimes on stage at her shows around the world.

As a country music journalist, I’ve had the pleasure of following, interviewing and covering Taylor in Nashville since she launched her career in 2006 when she released her debut album. My two children, one now a teenager and the other an adult, have had their picture taken with the superstar when country music was their thing. My son was five when I took him to her “Red Tour” when the photo opening took place.

I was even backstage in the press room when Swift won her first ever award at Nashville’s CMT Music Awards on April 16, 2007. She was nominated for her first award in the CMT category for Breakthrough Video of the Year, beating out “Amarillo Sky” by Jason Aldean, “Red High Heels” by Kellie Pickler, and “Leave The Pieces” by the Wreckers.

The big winners at the 2007 CMT Music Awards were Carrie Underwood in the Female Video of the Year category for “Before He Cheats,” Rascal Flatts took home Group Video of the Year for “What Hurts The Most,” and CMT favorite Kenny Chesney won Male Video of the Year for “You Save Me.”

When Taylor came backstage, she was over the moon because she had won the CMT award for Breakthrough Video of the Year for her music video for “Tim McGraw,” which was her first single to hit country radio and the song that introduced us all to the megastar.

As we celebrate Swift in every way and she continues to take over the world on her Era’s Tour, I thought it would be fun to look back at Taylor’s first awards show and share some of the things she said at the start of a career that has already seen her rack up over 500 awards.
