Golf Business News – Canada’s oldest club commissions Mackenzie & Ebert to develop a master plan for the golf course

The Victoria Golf Club in Vancouver has commissioned the British golf architecture firm Mackenzie & Ebert to develop a master plan for the renovation of Canada’s oldest and most historic golf course.

Tom Mackenzie and Martin Ebert are known for their expertise and innovation in golf course design. Their impressive portfolio includes roles as notable architects for 22 of the world’s top 100 golf courses outside the United States as listed by Golf Digest in 2022. Their extensive experience includes work on eight Open Championship venues and their recent award-winning renovation of Hamilton Golf & Country Club, host of the most recent Canadian Open.

“Our decision to partner with Mackenzie & Ebert was based on their exceptional track record and extensive knowledge of oceanfront golf courses,” said Richard Ingle, general manager of Victoria Golf Club, founded in 1893 and located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. “We are confident that this collaboration will bring significant improvements to the club as we develop our next golf course master plan that will enhance the playing experience for our members while preserving the unique character of our golf course.”

Architects Martin Ebert and Tom Mackenzie are in high demand to renovate some of the classic seaside golf courses.

“We are delighted to have been appointed to advise such a prestigious club as Victoria,” said Martin Ebert, Director at Mackenzie & Ebert International Golf Club Architects. “As every golfer knows, golf began on the coast and Victoria’s seaside holes are absolutely stunning.”

“At Mackenzie & Ebert we are very fortunate to have a number of classic coastal courses in our portfolio and we are extremely proud that Victoria now joins that list. We are very much looking forward to using our experience to help the club take the course that Mr AV Macan has contributed so much to to an even higher level. During this process we hope to build a strong relationship with the club and its members. We would like to thank the club for putting their trust in us to make this appointment.”

Club President and recent BC Hall Golf Hall of Fame inductee Craig Doell, who was involved in the selection process, said, “The most exciting decision I have been involved in since taking over as President was hiring Mackenzie & Ebert as our new golf course architects. They have impressed us with their outstanding reputation and amazing design and restoration work on some of the highest rated golf courses in the world. I think Victoria Golf Club is fortunate to have Mackenzie & Ebert supporting us with any future changes to the golf course and we look forward to working with them.”
