Ice cream parlor approved for workers’ club

A working men’s club in York is set to have a “cool” extension added after plans to set up an ice cream parlour inside were approved.

The counter with the frozen dairy products is to be opened in the former storage room of the St. Lawrence Working Men’s Club.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), the plans were approved by York City Council officials after no objections were received.

During the conversion of the 8.75 m² storage room, a counter for the presentation and sale of ice cream and related food and drinks will be installed.

A council report on the plans said that while the space would contrast with the workers’ club, it would function independently of the rest of the building.

The report states: “The proposed works would respect the overall character of the building and surrounding area and the impact on the quality of life of local residents would be acceptable.”

The St. Lawrence Working Men’s Club initially moved into a former bed and breakfast in the mid-2000s.

The billiard room on the first floor of the building was converted into an apartment in 2016.

There are numerous other places to eat in the surrounding area, including pubs, restaurants and takeaways.

The LDRS has asked the Workers’ Club for a statement.
