Taylor Booth nominated for Olympics. Who is on the USMNT squad? – Deseret News

Utahn Taylor Booth will travel to Paris to compete in the 2024 Olympic Games.

Booth was one of 18 players named to the U.S. men’s soccer team’s roster for the Summer Olympics, which was announced Monday. This year, the U.S. men’s soccer team will compete in the Olympics for the first time since 2008.

“It’s always special when you get the opportunity to play in a major tournament,” Booth told the Deseret News in June before the roster was announced.

The support of not only his family and American soccer fans, but the entire country will make his Olympic experience special, Booth said.

“What makes the Olympics so special is that Americans watch the games even if they’re not football fans,” he said. “I think it will be special to have our families there and everyone back home supporting us. That will give us extra motivation.”

Who is on the USMNT squad for the 2024 Olympic Games?

To be eligible for the Olympic men’s soccer team, players, with the exception of three overage players, had to be born on or after January 1, 2001.

“We have high expectations of every player who goes there and every player will be on the field, every player will play,” head coach Marko Mitrović said about the squad in a press conference on Monday.

The following 18 players made it to the US men’s Olympic squad:

Goalkeeper:

  • Patrick Schulte (St. Charles, Missouri)
  • Gaga Slonina (Addison, Illinois)

Defender:

  • Maximilian Dietz (Frankfurt, Germany)
  • Nathan Harriel (Oldsmar, Florida)
  • Miles Robinson (Arlington, Massachusetts)
  • John Tolkin (Chatham, New Jersey)
  • Caleb Wiley (Atlanta, Georgia)
  • Walker Zimmerman (Lawrenceville, Georgia)

Midfield player:

  • Gianluca Busio (Greensboro, North Carolina)
  • Benjamin Cremaschi (Key Biscayne, Florida)
  • Jack McGlynn (Queens, New York)
  • Djordje Mihailovic (Jacksonville, Florida)
  • Tanner Tessman (Birmingham, Alabama)

Forward:

  • Paxten Aaronson (Medford, New Jersey)
  • Taylor Booth (Eden, Utah)
  • Duncan McGuire (Omaha, Nebraska)
  • Kevin Paredes (South Riding, Virginia)
  • Griffin Yow (Clifton, Virginia)

What football rules apply to substitute players at the Olympic Games?

In addition to the 18 players selected for the main roster, four alternates will travel to Paris. The alternates for the U.S. Men’s National Team Olympic squad are:

  • Josh Atencio (midfielder; Bellevue, Washington)
  • Jacob Davis (defenseman; Rochester, Michigan)
  • Johan Gomez (Forward; Keller, Texas)
  • John Pulskamp (goalkeeper; Bakersfield, California)

Traditionally, these four substitutes are never used unless a player from the main squad suffers a tournament-ending injury. A player who is replaced by a substitute is not allowed to return to the main squad.

This year, that’s changing. A team can make a temporary change if it announces it six hours before a game, Emma Hayes, head coach of the U.S. women’s national team, said in a press conference on Monday.
