Donald’s death was announced last month by his son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, who remembered his father in a poignant message on X, formerly known as Twitter.
He wrote: “It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally consider him to be one of the greatest actors in film history.”
“He was never discouraged by a role, whether good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and you can never ask for more than that. A fulfilling life.”
The “24” star – whose mother is Donald’s ex-wife Shirley Douglas – also revealed how much his father helped him succeed in show business.
He told The Times newspaper: “My father and I really got to know each other after I left home at 15.
“My parents split up when I was three and my mother, sister and I moved to Canada, so I no longer lived with my father. I saw him at Christmas and for a few weeks in the summer.
“I did see him, but it was really limited to the holidays. I have to think that having the same last name as my father helped me sometimes.
“There must have been moments when people who were friends with my father were inclined to help me. But I know of two specific cases where someone was not friends with my father and I sat in the office for four hours and never got to a meeting.”
