Cheating at the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is the ‘Sausage

Americans have lost faith in Congress and the political class, universities and the media, but alas, it has come to this… Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Since 1972, it has been a pure and joyful meritocracy that brings together tourists, locals and fast food lovers of all ages to watch men and women test the limits of the human stomach by wolfing down as many sausages as possible from pre-filled plates in just 10 minutes.

After 600 seconds, the judges count the plates and announce the scores.

But now this not so old ritual has become the victim of a crime.

At least Nick Wehry does not deny this accusation: He requested a correction of his score in light of allegations that he stole an empty plate from a fellow competitor at the last competition on July 4, which increased his score from a respectable 46.75 dogs to an undeserved 51.75, thus crossing the coveted 50-dog mark and joining the elite circle of Frankfurt eaters.

The suspicion is that he simply wanted to keep up with his wife: his wife is the women’s champion and mustard belt holder, Miki Sudo.

Note, however: Wehry insists he did not cheat, but does not want to create any appearance of “impropriety.”

If he really is as kosher as the dogs, he can prove it next year.

And his admission is crucial, since the competition rules do not even take into account appeals other than the verdicts announced by the jury.

At least this year’s controversy is over and the honor of the competition has been restored.

The decline of the West has not yet reached Coney Island.
