Xbox Series X sales have fallen behind Xbox One and 360

Xbox Series X sales have fallen behind Xbox One and 360

Highlights

  • Xbox Series X sales are currently lagging behind those of the Xbox One and Xbox 360 in its first 43 months on the market.
  • It was revealed that Xbox One sales are 13 percent ahead of Xbox Series X, while Xbox 360 is also just ahead.
  • However, PlayStation does not have such problems, as it was also announced that the PS5 is selling eight percent better than the PS4.

We’ve known for a while that Xbox has struggled to shift their hardware, which has resulted in major exclusives like Sea of Thieves and Hi-Fi Rush being released on rival consoles. This raises several questions about whether Xbox hardware is even needed anymore in today’s gaming landscape, and the chances of Xbox becoming a third-party developer have never been higher.

The latest sales figures for the Xbox Series X don’t paint a pretty picture either. Mat Piscatella, video game industry consultant at Circana, recently revealed that the Series X is lagging behind the Xbox One and Xbox 360 in its first 43 months on the market. Piscatella states that the Xbox One is currently generating a whopping 13 percent more sales than the Xbox Series X, while the Xbox 360 is only slightly ahead.

That’s not a good sign considering the Xbox One is considered the console that started the company’s current problems, and the Xbox Series X shows little sign of improving sales in the coming years. There are big titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Avowed, and Perfect Dark in the pipeline that will almost certainly help, but Xbox isn’t doing itself any favors with confusing Game Pass changes and price hikes.

PlayStation 5 is currently selling better than PlayStation 4

What makes matters worse is that Xbox’s competitors are doing pretty well. In the same tweet thread, Piscatella reveals that the PlayStation 5 is currently selling eight percent more than the PlayStation 4 when comparing its first 43 months on the market. That’s especially impressive considering the console was incredibly hard to get hold of in the year it launched.

And while we don’t have a comparison for the Nintendo Switch, as it’s now a seven-year-old console, we do know that it ranked second in the hardware market in terms of sales in May. With the Xbox Series X selling less than the Nintendo Switch, despite the latter entering its final year and having been on the market for more than half a decade, it’s safe to say things aren’t going so well for Microsoft, and that might explain why the company seems so keen to release its exclusives on other platforms.
