“The Late Show” and “The Daily Show” are neck and neck – GoldDerby

Having trouble predicting what will win Best Variety Talk Series at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s ask Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy experts! These savvy experts from major media have given their predictions, and they’re tied between CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” The other two potential nominees, according to the experts’ current racetrack odds, are Netflix’s “John Mulaney Presents Everybody’s in LA” and ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

At the time of this writing, three of our eight Emmy experts are predicting a win for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Jazz Tangcay (diversity) and Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine). Stephen Colbert is a ten-time Emmy winner for his work on “Stephen Colbert’s Election Night 2020,” “The Colbert Report” and “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.” Notably, however, he has never won a trophy for “The Late Show” … until now?

Three more Emmyologists — Joyce Eng (Golden Derby), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) and Susan King (Gold Derby) – believe instead that “The Daily Show” will prevail. Jon Stewart returned to the desk this year after a nearly decade-long absence, and now shares hosting duties with the show’s various correspondents. “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” has previously won the award 11 times, most recently in 2015, while “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” took home the win last year. He is a three-time Emmy winner for “John Mulaney: Baby J,” “John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous At Radio City” and “Saturday Night Live.”

“Jimmy Kimmel Live” is also well represented in our expert rankings. The long-running chat program received 12 nominations in this race, but has not yet been able to prevail. Jimmy KimmelHis star continues to rise, having hosted the Oscars four times, and currently has two Emmys to his credit for producing “Live in Front of a Studio Audience.”

Recent Emmy winners in the Best Variety Talk Series category include The Daily Show with Trevor Noah in 2023 and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver in 2022-16 (last year the category was changed to Best Variety Scripted Series).
