Judge convicts mother of drunk driving that led to her daughter’s death

HOLLYWOOD, SC (WCSC) – A Charleston County judge has ruled that a mother who drove under the influence of alcohol, rolled over and killed her 16-year-old daughter will spend some time under house arrest.

Tyesha Jenkins’ family stood behind her in the courtroom and mourned the loss of their 16-year-old daughter Quantasia.

Jenkins pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol and expressed her deep regret for her actions that resulted in such a loss. The accident occurred on April 8, 2021, on Sugar Hill Road in Hollywood, and Jenkins was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol causing death, driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily harm, and involuntary manslaughter.

Jenkins’ family members say the loss of their beloved wife is punishment enough and they want to move on and continue to grieve as a family. They asked that Jenkins receive the minimum sentence of one year. They say they are moving on as a family by believing that God has called the 16-year-old to Himself and has forgiven her mother.

A judge listened to testimony from several family members and, after taking a few minutes to reflect on the situation, gave a stern speech about responsible driving and sentenced Jenkins to a year of house arrest, saying he felt sorry for the family.

Shantasia Jenkins is the twin sister of the victim and the daughter of the defendant. She spoke on behalf of her mother, saying that they need her at home and that this one mistake has already torn their family apart so there is no reason to destroy their family any further.

“My mother is our protector. My sister Quantasia appeared to me in a dream and I want you to tell my mother that it is not her fault, it is not her fault,” she said.

According to the sentence, Jenkins must spend one year at home under virtual supervision and not leave for any reason, after which he will be on probation for five years.
