Wolverines face Virginia Tech

The Michigan basketball team’s schedule for the 2024–25 season is nearly complete after the program announced three new non-conference opponents as well as its opening game for the Fort Myers Tip-Off during Thanksgiving week.

Michigan will face Virginia Tech in the Fort Myers Tip-Off at 6 p.m. ET on Nov. 25. The game will be televised on FS1. UM will then play again two days later on Nov. 27 against South Carolina or Xavier. The consolation game will be first at 6 p.m., with the final game following approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game of the night.

‘SINGLE PIECE’: Why the “Sack Sensei” is fully committed to Michigan football player Mason Graham

Virginia Tech finished 19-15 (10-10 ACC) last season under Mike Young. After reaching the NCAA Tournament in five of six seasons between 2016 and 2022 (though they were eliminated in the first round four times), the Hokies have missed the NCAA Tournament in two consecutive seasons.

The Hokies’ roster is almost as unknown as the Wolverines’; Virginia Tech has signed five players from the transfer portal from Duke (Jaden Schutt), VCU (Tiobu Lawal), Cal (Rodney Brown), Temple (Hysier Miller) and Charleston (Ben Burnham). However, Virginia Tech’s 65th-ranked transfer class is not as highly regarded as Michigan’s, which is ranked 11th by 247Sports.

Michigan has a 4-2 overall record against Virginia Tech, but has lost the last two meetings, including a 73-70 loss in 2016 when UM squandered a 10-point second-half lead.

The program also announced three non-conference games, all to be played in Ann Arbor. Michigan will now open the season against Cleveland State (Nov. 4) and has two opponents during the Christmas break when students are away: games against Purdue Fort Wayne (Dec. 22) and Western Kentucky (Dec. 29).

The Wolverines also have games scheduled against Wake Forest (November 10) in Greensboro and against Texas Christian (November 15) and Miami Ohio (November 18) at the Crisler Center.
