Neighbors raise concerns about possible 124-foot Mormon temple tower project

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – Dozens of people upset about the proposed 125-foot tower of a new Mormon temple were invited Tuesday night to learn more about the project that could be an eyesore for the community.

Neighbors were invited to an open house at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – near the proposed temple site at Stockdale Highway and Jewetta Avenue. Community members are concerned about the proposed tower, which would be taller than the maximum 60-foot height allowed by city ordinance.

Some West Bakersfield residents said they just wanted the temple to follow the rules.

“Unfortunately, I feel that a 124-foot tower on our property would not be a pretty sight,” said Kathy Harlan, a Brighton Park resident.

The Bakersfield City Council has already received the plans for the new temple, but no decision has been made yet.

“I think it was a really good night, there was a lot of really great feedback, I think it was a positive experience, I think it was a positive experience for me,” said Kelley Taylor, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
