It’s been a long road between Major League Baseball All-Star appearances for Atlanta Braves pitcher Chris Sale.

Sale participated in the All-Star Game seven times in a row from 2012 to 2018, but then struggled with a variety of injuries.

Now he’s back and leads the majors in wins.

Here’s everything you need to know about Chris Sale as he prepares for his eighth All-Star appearance.

Where did Chris Sale grow up?

Sale was born on March 30, 1989, in Lakeland. He attended and graduated from Lakeland High School. After his senior year in 2007, Sale was drafted in the 21st round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Colorado Rockies, but decided not to sign and instead chose to attend college.

Where did Chris Sale study?

Sale played college baseball at Florida Gulf Coast University. In his freshman season in 2008, he was used primarily as a reliever, posting a 2-0 record and a 2.62 ERA in 20 appearances.

As a sophomore, he started 12 games and went 7-4 with a 2.72 ERA. He had one complete game.

In his junior year, he went 11-0 with a 2.01 ERA in 15 starts and two relief appearances. Sale pitched 103 innings, recording 146 strikeouts and 14 walks. At the end of the regular season, he led the NCAA in strikeouts and was named Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year and Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year.

Who drafted Chris Sale?

After his third year at FGCU, Sale was selected by the Chicago White Sox 13th overall in the first round of the 2010 MLB Draft.

Sale was assigned to the White Sox’s Class A affiliate team, the Winston-Salem Dash. After four games there, he was called up to the White Sox’s Triple-A affiliate team, the Charlotte Knights.

In seven appearances there, he had a 2.84 ERA, allowed three hits and two earned runs, and had four walks and 15 strikeouts.

When did Chris Sale make his MLB debut?

Sale was promoted to the Major Leagues for the first time on August 4, 2010, and made his MLB debut on August 6 in the eighth inning against the Baltimore Orioles.

He made his first save on September 1, 2010 against the Cleveland Indians.

In his rookie year, Sale went 2–1 with a 1.93 ERA, 32 strikeouts and 4 saves in 21 appearances.

The rocky road of selling

In his second major league season, Sale appeared in 58 games, none of them as a starter, and finished the season with a 2.79 ERA.

Sale became a starter in his third year in 2012, the first of seven consecutive All-Star appearances. During those seven years, Sale went 99-59 and led the league in strikeouts twice, in 2015 (274) and 2017 (308).

Sale was traded by the White Sox after seven seasons and ended up with the Boston Red Sox before the 2017 season.

Chris Sale’s injury history

After a 12-4 season in 2018, in which Sale made his seventh All-Star appearance, things went wrong.

Sale struggled through the first half of 2019 and then missed the rest of the season with an elbow injury.

When the pandemic broke out in 2020, Sale, who had initially decided against surgery, underwent Tommy John surgery.

Sale next pitched in August 2021, nearly two years after being placed on the injured list in 2019. He appeared to be back in form, finishing 2021 5-1 with a 3.16 ERA.

However, a rib injury sidelined him for much of the 2022 season.

After his return in 2023, a shoulder injury shortened his season by another as he spent time on the 60-day injured list.

Chris Sale revived at the Atlanta Braves

The Red Sox traded Sale to the Atlanta Braves before the 2024 season.

In the first half of 2024, Sale was back to his old self, posting a 12-3 record and a 2.74 ERA.

All 13 pitchers on the National League roster are participating in an All-Star game for either the first or second time.

The All-Star pitcher who comes closest to Sale is Corbin Burnes of the Baltimore Orioles, who made the All-Star team for the fourth time.

Did Chris Sale win a Cy Young?

No. The closest he came to second place was in 2017. He was 17-8 with a 2.90 ERA and led the American League with 308 strikeouts. He lost the Cy Young title to Corey Kluber.

What is Chris Sale’s annual salary?

Sale will make $27.5 million in 2024, the same as he made in 2023. He is set to make $20 million in 2025 if he finishes in the top 10 in the 2024 Cy Young voting and does not finish the year on the injured list. Value may increase based on number of games started and Cy Young finishes.

Over the course of his career, Sale has amassed $205 million.
