Counterpoint was founded by legendary choral conductor and arranger Robert De Cormier and is based in Montpelier. The ensemble is dedicated to performing choral chamber music and collaborating with music students in Vermont and beyond. Praised for “clarity, skill” and “sophisticated musical expressiveness,” they perform concerts throughout Vermont and the surrounding region. Counterpoint has recorded seven CDs on Albany Records and released four more CDs independently. Artistic Director Nathaniel G. Lew holds music degrees from Yale, Cambridge and the University of California, Berkeley. He is currently Professor of Music and Director of the Honors Program at St. Michael’s College in Colchester.

Three of Vermont’s finest classical instrumentalists (violinist Laura Markowitz, cellist John Dunlop, pianist Annemieke McLane) join the singers of Counterpoint for this fascinating crossover of folk traditions and classical music: Johannes Brahms’ passionate “Gypsy Songs,” a collection of Ludwig van Beethoven’s settings of Scottish folk songs and folk song settings by Béla Bartók, and piano trio movements by Fanny Hensel and Clara Schumann.
