Singer-songwriter Beck begins orchestral concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl

On Monday (7/8) diversitywrites Chris Willman: “Beck’s performance with the LA Phil on Saturday night … was an apotheosis of the kind of pop star-at-the-pops event the Hollywood Bowl was truly made for, with Beck as a live artist largely deviating from the rest of his repertoire to highlight the sluggishest parts of his catalog and achieve maximum symphonic synergy. One might be tempted to call it an ‘only in LA’ night if one didn’t know that this is one of seven shows Beck is doing around the country this month with house orchestras … Other cities and other coasts deserve a piece of this great musical success, too. Seeing Beck with an orchestra seems more inevitable than with almost any other, even though he hasn’t indulged in it much as a concert artist thus far. His father, David Campbell, is one of the more famous orchestral arrangers in rock circles, far beyond his work with his son…The elder Campbell is also said to have overseen all the new arrangements created for this tour…The 20-song set Beck played with the Philharmonic this weekend (not including a three-number orchestra-free encore segment) more than doubled the amount of time he had previously been able to devote to his symphonic side at a show.”
