Ariana Grande criticizes her voice — The Beat 92.5

Ariana Grande has vehemently defended herself against criticism of her voice.

During an appearance on the latest episode of Evan Ross Katz’s podcast “Shut Up Evan,” the pop star and actress addressed claims that she would change her voice to sound like her character Glinda from the upcoming film “Wicked.”

“I mean, you see male actors, sure, people make jokes here and there, but looking back, it’s always like, ‘Oh wow, how dedicated he is to his craft! What an incredible transformation! He’s a brilliant performer!'” said Ariana, 31, referring to Hollywood’s double standards.

She continued, “But then it’s like, God forbid, I sneeze like Glinda or something, (then) I’m just crazy… it’s the weirdest thing.”

The “We Can’t Be Friends” singer also noted that she “played a character every single day for a long time,” referring to her character Glinda.

Ariana continued: “(I’ve) been training my voice to do different things for a long time before I left for London and before all this; muscle memory is a real thing.”

In June, Ariana received criticism for apparently changing her voice from high to low during an appearance on the podcast “Podcrushed.”

Shortly after a clip of her speech on the podcast went viral, she explained in a TikTok video that she lets her voice fluctuate “intentionally.”

“Habit (of speaking like this for two years) and also vocal health. I intentionally change my vocal pitch (high/low) often depending on how much I sing,” she said at the time. “I’ve always done that, BYE.”

Ariana was cast in “Wicked” in 2021. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on November 22nd.
