CONFESSIONS OF THE DEAD by James Patterson and JD Barker

Hollows Bend, New Hampshire, is a picture-perfect town. The crime rate – zero – is a point of pride for Sheriff Ellie Pritchett. The trouble begins the day the stranger shows up. She is a mysterious young girl who cannot – or will not – answer any questions. She does not even want to tell Sheriff Pritchett her name. While the girl is in protective custody, the officers are called to several crime scenes that lead them ever closer to a lake outside of town that is not on any map…

Small towns can be a paradise for some people. The close-knit community, quiet nights, and lack of rush hour traffic can be things some people dream of their entire lives. They crave a slower pace of life and are looking for a peaceful place to call home, outside the glaring lights of the big city, where the stars are more visible at night.

For others, small towns can be boring. Too quiet, too small, too limited in what they can do. Instead, they long for bigger cities with vibrant nightlife and new people to meet every day. Places with more opportunities to explore, more things to do, just more.

Others find it terrifying. The claustrophobia of knowing that everyone is meddling in your affairs. The fear when a crime is committed and you know it is someone you live or work next to. The way the masses can turn against you just because a rumor of a mistake is unfounded. Isolation too can go from peaceful to paralyzing when there is no one to help you when things go wrong.

If you’re one of the latter, you’ve come to the right place! Here are nine of the best small-town horror books!
