MOTOCROSS ACTION – MIDWEEK REPORT

MOTOCROSS ACTION – MIDWEEK REPORT

#WHIPITWEDNESDAY

Driver: Joey Savatgy

Joey was another rider that had a successful amateur career before moving to the pro league. As a rider in the Red Bull Jams amateur program for Honda, Joey was able to ride in one of the best programs around at the time. His first big wins came in the 85 class at Loretta Lynn’s where he was able to beat riders like Jessy Nelson, Zach Bell and Jace Owen who were some of the top talents at the time. He eventually switched to Suzuki in his final years as an amateur and picked up a few championships along the way. He then moved to the pro league and rode for many different teams over the years. His best years were when he rode for Pro Circuit Kawasaki and competed for a few different championships in supercross and motocross. After racing the 450 for some time, he took a couple of seasons off to re-evaluate his position. This year he signed for motocross with the Triumph Racing Team and has been somewhat successful so far.

Chance Hymas secures his first overall victory

Chance Hymas rode to victory at Red Bud last weekend to claim his first overall win. Chance had previously taken a motocross win at Thunder Valley and it was only a matter of time before he took the overall as well. After a less than significant Supercross season, Chance seemed to be competing at the highest level, but when it came to motocross, his skills began to show and he was the best 250 rider under the Honda tent this year. Jo Shimoda has been gaining momentum each weekend and has also taken a motocross win this season. But Hymas is currently second in the point standings.

Haiden Deegan goes down with a lapped rider

Haiden Deegan was unlucky at Red Bud when a lapped rider flew hard over the bars on one of the larger tabletop jumps on the course. The flag crew focused on the lapper’s blue flag and didn’t get the yellow out in time as only a few seconds passed between the crash and Deegan’s jump apex. Haiden landed downbike on the backside of the jump, which sent him flying over the bars and hard to the ground. Most riders would need a few minutes to recover after such a bad crash, but Haiden Deegan was right back on his feet and rushed back to the bike, finishing fifth in the race.

MASTERPOOL CONSTRUCTION EVERY WEEKEND

Ty Masterpool has been a star since he was signed as a reserve rider for the Pro Circuit Kawasaki team at the start of the season. Ty has already taken an overall win at High Point this year and picked up another moto win in the first race at Red Bud. He admitted that in the second moto he pushed hard early in the race and just ran out of steam at the end. Although he has had some inconsistent results this season, he is well on his way to becoming a top contender.

ASK THE MXPERTS: I WANT A MOTOCROSS TIRE THAT I CAN RIDE ON THE STREET.

Are you looking for a street-legal motocross tire? Then the Metzeler MC360 is the right tire for you.

WHAT YOU WANNA DO?

Dear MXA,

I’m looking for a motocross tire that I can ride on the track, trails and highway. In my home state of Mexico, you can ride your dirt bike almost anywhere, including in the city. But the battered, rough asphalt roads are wearing out my Dunlop MX3S tires. Is there a motocross tire that can be used on the street and on the track?

The MXA test team has raced in Mexico and ridden dirt bikes on the street, so they know what you’re looking for. Most tire manufacturers make a DOT-approved dirt bike tire for use at the ISDE, but we can only think of one tire that is a true motocross tire that is legal for highway use. The Metzeler MC360 is a street-legal, DOT-approved street tire that can be used on everything from street to gravel to trails to ISDT and motocross. We tested it as a motocross tire and were very happy with its performance on the track, but the furthest we went on asphalt was on the Glen Helen off-road loop, where there are short sections of asphalt. The MC360 comes in two models, Mid-Soft and Mid-Hard. We tested the Mid-Soft for motocross, but for your conditions you’d probably have better luck with the hardpack-specific Mid-Hard. It retails for $129.04 (rear) and $99.95 (front). For more information visit www.metzeler.com.

MOOSE RACING REAR BRAKE RESERVOIR COOLING EXTENSIONS

Moose Racing would like to introduce you to our new rear brake reservoir cooler extensions. These are CNC machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and anodized to match the manufacturer’s OEM colors. The extensions bolt directly into the rear master cylinder to add extra volume to the rear brake system. They feature a finned body to create additional cooling surface and maximize braking performance. MSRP is $22.95-$23.95. Head to your local dealer or www.mooseracing.com to check them out.

Quote of the week: Haiden Deegan has a stable points lead

“It was a little bit of a slower day for me. I qualified fourth and in the first moto I rode really well. I got a good start, made it to master pool and we had another photo finish. He ended up winning but it was super close. Then in the second moto I got pushed off really hard on the start which made it a little difficult for me but I got going. I started to put in some of the fastest laps and then a rider crashed on a landing and there were no flags and I crashed. So, 2-6 for fifth overall on the day and no points lost, that’s good. We still have a 42 point lead so we’re in a comfortable position. We’re going to get back to work this week though so we can come back with momentum next weekend.”

MXA FANTASY LEAGUE: THE WINNER OF THE RED BUD MOTOCROSS NATIONAL ACHIEVED 298 POINTS

After a great weekend of racing, we look at the MXA Fantasy League results from the 2024 Red Bud National. Chance Hymas took his first win as a pro, but the number one pick was Haiden Deegan. In 450, Chase Sexton was number one and he actually took the win. This race was unpredictable as there were a lot of position changes on the track during the motos. Below we see the picks that resulted in a win.

THE WINNER OF THE RED BUD FANTASY LEAGUE “CHRISRABANG

This week’s MXA Fantasy League round in Red Bud featured a few draws, but Chrisrabang was the first to enter the picks for the weekend, earning him the FMF system win.

250 CLASS PREDICTIONS

The predictions for the 250cc class were very good with all riders in the top six. First, Chrisrabang had Haiden Deegan picked to win. Haiden only finished fifth, earning him 18 fantasy league points. Second, he picked Tom Vialle, who finished fourth on the day, earning 19 fantasy points. Third, he picked Jo Shimoda, who finished third overall, earning 31 fantasy points including the ten-point bonus. Fourth, he picked Levi Kitchen, who finished sixth, earning 17 fantasy points. Fifth, he picked Chance Hymas, who won, earning 26 fantasy league points with no bonus. And sixth, he picked Ty Masterpool, who finished second, earning 23 fantasy points. Although the picks were out of order, many points were gained by not missing any rider in the top six.

450 CLASS PREDICTION

Out of 450 picks, Chrisrabang chose Chase Sexton, who ended up winning and earning him 36 fantasy points including a ten-point bonus. Second, he chose Hunter Lawrence, who finished third in the race and earned 21 fantasy points. Third, he chose Aaron Plessinger, who finished second and earned 23 fantasy points but not the ten-point bonus. Fourth, he chose Jason Anderson, who finished fourth and earned him 29 fantasy points including a ten-point bonus. Fifth, he chose Justin Cooper, who finished fifth overall and earned him 28 fantasy points including a ten-point bonus. Sixth, he also had a correct prediction, choosing Malcolm Stewart, earning him 27 fantasy points including a ten-point bonus. These predictions not only earned him points for each rider, but also for the correct placement, giving him the overall win in the MXA Fantasy League for Red Bud.
