Patton Oswalt has confirmed the incredible inspiration behind Boba Fett’s return in the TV series The Book of Boba Fettand revealed that it was a tribute to one of his roles. One of the most iconic scenes from the Disney+ series shows Fett climbing out of the Sarlacc Pit after surviving his fall, as in Return of the Jedi. The moment begins with him lifting one arm out of the sand, moving it back and forth before finally pulling himself up. This moment leads him to his operations on Tatooine along with the rest of The Book of Boba Fett‘s cast.

But if you think about Jimmy Kimmel Live! (via starwars_siths), Oswalt revealed Fett’s return in The Book of Boba Fett was actually defeated by his filibuster in a scene from Parks and Recreation.

In the clip, the actor explains that John Favreau told him that the scene where Fett’s arm sticks out of the sand was a perfect fit for his performance in the comedy. Check out what Oswalt had to say below:

When The Book of Boba Fett was on the Disney Channel and Jon Favreau confirmed it to me, they edited the opening scene to match my filibuster speech (in Parks and Recreation). The hand can be timed. The hand comes up, hits the (sand), coming down from the twin suns. The hand comes out of the sand, you can time it to match my filibuster speech. They did that on purpose.

Oswalt’s Parks and Recreation Scene inspired the opening of The Book of Boba Fett is an unpredictable connectionbut one that makes sense when you watch both clips. Although subtle, the way the actor moves his hand in the comedy is very similar to the way Fett pulls himself out of the Sarlacc pit in the show’s opening scene. This effectively makes the actor’s filibuster speech canon of the war of stars Franchise that served as a parallel to the return of the famous bounty hunter.

Although there have been some retcons of Boba Fett since his return to Disney’s version of the franchise, references to other media show how inspired the titular series was of the character. Although The Book of Boba Fett received a lukewarm reception upon releaselittle details like the inspiration from Oswalt show how much effort was put into the series, regardless of criticism. It also opens the door for future projects to reference a whole host of other shows and movies, even in subtle ways like the opening of Fett’s show did.

This potential could even lead to an unconfirmed The Book of Boba Fett Season 2, more of his story should be needed to flesh out the Mandoverse. If that is the case, there could be even more references to Parks and Recreationor even Oswalt’s work in general in future Fett appearances. This could also be applied to war of stars Projects overall that could be more direct about what inspired even the smallest parts of their most important scenes.
