“We’re really excited”: Scooby-Doo live-action series gets exciting update

Mystery Inc. brings its case-solving skills to a new Scooby-Doo Live-action series. Although there is no release date for the project yet, Greg Berlanti, who is teaming up with the streamer to create the show, says work is currently underway on creating the pilot episode.




Berlanti shared the news with Deadline, explaining his personal connection to the Scooby-Doo Franchise. “With Scooby-Doo, We listened to the pitches for a year and a half and we finally found one that we felt captured it really well,” he said of the upcoming live-action series. “I just worked on the pitch for the first episode this morning, so we’re really excited.”

The original Scooby-Doo television series created a formula of storylines and character archetypes that was adopted in many subsequent successful animated films.


Berlanti explained that Scooby-Doo is particularly close to his heart, because his first temporary job in the industry was at the Hanna-Barbera animation studio. “I sat with Joe Barbera and Bill Hanna while they were signing animation pictures,” Berlanti recalled. “I would go in the morning and get a stack of these animation pictures with my boss. First I went to Bill Hanna’s office. He was a very stoic guy. And then my favorite part of the day came when I went to see Joe Barbera. He was such a life force. He would sign the pictures, but he would stop and regale me with the most amazing stories.”

He told stories about how Scooby was created and what they thought, and how it was in the late 60s and kids felt attacked by adults, they felt overwhelmed and they needed empowermentBerlanti continued. “When they suggested it to Bill Paley, he said, you need a dog or something. And that was the birth of Scooby-Doo. I always loved them as a kid. And with any work, whether it’s Hanna-Barbera or DC or anything at Warners, you’re lucky to be the historian who helps bring it into a new generation.”
