The stop-motion studio behind “Coraline” and the producers of “Into the Spider-Verse” … are making a live-action film together?

Laikathe animation studio behind films like Coralline is teaming up with the producers of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Man Universe,” Phil Lord and Chris Miller, for a live-action film.

Since its inception, Laika has only done one thing: make stop motion films. It started with Coraline, a film that achieved cult status since its release and later spawned films such as ParaNorman, Kubo – The Brave SamuraiAnd Missing linkalthough it has not been as successful since the first film. Lord and Miller, on the other hand, have produced several live-action projects over the years, the most notable of which is 21 Jump Streetbut for many years they have been focusing on animation projects like the Spider-Verse films. So, tell me, why are the animation studio and the producer duo teaming up to make a live-action film?

As Variety reports, Laika, Lord and Miller are teaming up to make Crumble, an original film written by Brian Duffield (Skull Island) that follows a married couple who embark on an adventurous world tour to find a cure for an ancient curse. Duffield is also set to direct, with Lord and Miller producing. “I’ll never forget watching ‘Coraline’ on opening night at AMC Burbank 16 and wondering who these wonderful new geniuses were,” Duffield said in a statement. “I can’t wait to make a film with them and hopefully live up to their reputation, and I couldn’t be more excited to embark on a new adventure with my friends at Lord Miller.”

The film in general seems to be part of a push for Laika to move partially towards live-action projects, as it even has a president of live-action films and series, Matt Levin. In a statement, Levin said, “We are thrilled to be working with Brian and the entire team at Lord Miller on this special film. Brian has such a unique voice and Crumble perfectly embodies the bold, emotional and imaginative storytelling we champion at Laika. Lord Miller is in a class of his own and we couldn’t ask for a better creative team to bring this story to life.”

Fortunately, this doesn’t mean the end of stop-motion projects for Laika, as the studio is working on “The Night Gardener,” an original story described as a dark neo-noir folk tale.
