Danny Wolf now plays the 4 for Michigan Basketball

This offseason, there has been much discussion among Michigan basketball fans about who will make up the Wolverines’ starting lineup.

I’ve been saying that it’s going to be Danny Wolf. I realize there might be some issues on defense for the 7’10 forward/center, but according to what Wolf said on the Defend The Block podcast, the ability to play both the four and the five is one of the reasons he chose Michigan Basketball in the portal.

“What really stood out was my ability to play the ‘4’ and the ‘5,’” Wolf explained, via 247 Sports. “… Because with my skill set and the way it translates to the next level, the ‘4’ is something I need to do. And I think once that became clear and I got all my questions answered and they said they see me at the ‘4,’ the ‘5,’ and doing different actions and all that stuff, it seemed pretty seamless.”

During his visit to Michigan Basketball, Wolf said he quickly hit it off with Vlad Goldin and it didn’t take long for him to realize playing alongside the 7-foot-5 center could work.

“We got along right away. And he’s always smiling, he’s always in a good mood,” Wolf said via 247 Sports. “We made shots together and it quickly became clear that it could work and become something very special. … You don’t often see a lot of six-foot-tall players on the court at the same time.”

One reason it could work for the Wolverines is that Wolf is a great shooter. He’s also a great ball handler, especially for his size, and he even moved the ball forward at times for Yale. He’s a scorer and a playmaker. That should work well with Goldin, who has much more of a presence in the low post but is still dominant. Together on the court, they should be difficult to defend.

However, athletic fours in the Big Ten could take advantage of Wolf, but it will be up to Dusty May to protect him as best as he can. Hopefully the length will be an advantage. May has also said he is pleased with Wolf’s defensive abilities.

I’m not saying he’ll be an elite defender, but I believe he’ll defend well enough to be a starting five alongside Vlad Goldin.
