Serj Tankian “completely open” to a sequel to System Of A Down with a new singer: “Absolutely”

Serj Tankian of System Of A Down has said he would be open to the band continuing with a new lead singer.

When appearing on the Broken record In the podcast, the singer of “Toxicity” was asked if he would be okay if the band continued without him and replaced him with a new singer, to which he replied: “Absolutely. I offered them that opportunity and have been very supportive of them for many years.”

“If that’s what they wanted, if they wanted to continue in a way that I didn’t want to – for example, if they wanted to tour a lot and I just wanted to do a few shows here and there because I don’t tour that much, then to be fair to them, if that’s what they wanted, then I’m still completely open to it. I’m not sure that’s what they want.”

He continued: “So far they haven’t done that and I think it would be damaging to the prestige and legacy of the band itself, but as friends and as someone who cares deeply about my partners, I would be OK with it.”

Tankian has already spoken about his dislike of extended tours, telling Rainn Wilson in May that they are “physically demanding.” “I love performing,” he said in their interview for LiveSigning YouTube channel before explaining why it was so difficult for him.

“I think when you go on a long tour, it’s not only physically exhausting, but after a while it becomes artistically redundant because you’re just repeating the same thing over and over again,” he continued.

“That’s why we enjoy these one-off performances so much. They’re special events, special occasions. We can’t do them everywhere. We can’t do them all the time. But in a way, the performances are fun again.”

In the same month, an excerpt from his new memoirs appeared, Down with the system: A kind of memoir was shared by Rolling Stoneand announced that System Of A Down auditioned for a new singer in 2018 after he offered to leave the band.

Discussion of the memoirs with NMETankian said, “There are a lot of interesting lessons in my own life and I hope it sparks something in young creators or aspiring creators.”

Tankian also announced a new solo EP titled “Foundations” earlier this year.
