MLB Together Legacy unveils hydroponic farm for Birmingham’s Boys and Girls Club

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WIAT) — Members of the MLB stopped by the AG Gaston Boys & Girls Club before Thursday’s historic game at Rickwood Field to unveil a new project.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the club’s new hydroponic farm, where children can learn to grow vegetables without soil. MLB’s Together Legacy donated its funds to invest in local baseball communities.

“Birmingham has been an incredible host to Major League Baseball and we look forward to a great event tonight,” MLB Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. told CBS 42.

The new installation will provide hands-on instruction to local children about farming and sustainability. Those who attended the event wearing blue shirts also had the opportunity to attend the MLB game on Thursday night.

San Francisco Giants President and CEO Larry Baer also sees the action on the field as a unique learning opportunity.

“I think there are great learning and teaching moments for our youth about integration and segregation,” Baer said. “Where we came from and where we still need to go, those lessons are invaluable.”
