New dates set for deaths in La Salle County – Shaw Local

New dates have been announced in the fatal shooting cases in Ottawa and Streator, and a Marseille man charged with murder has been given a new judge.

Streator shooting

Malcolm Whitfield, 30, also listed in DeKalb, made an unscheduled appearance in La Salle County District Court on Thursday. His trial was scheduled for mid-July. He is accused of shooting three people in 2023, including Shaquita Kelly, who died from her injuries.

Whitfield’s trial has now been postponed until August 26. His next appearance is August 23. Attorneys indicated there was a scheduling issue with a witness.

Shooting in Ottawa

The next hearing for Chastity Furar, 22, of Spring Valley, who is also listed in Ottawa, has been rescheduled for Aug. 9. An evaluation of her mental health status is pending.

Furar is accused of shooting Ottawa resident Eric Clements in 2023 and is charged with first-degree murder. Although Furar is not accused of firing the fatal shot – she is accused of driving the shooter and supplying him with the weapon – she would face an extended prison sentence of up to 75 years if convicted.

Death in Marseille

Logan Petre, 21, of Marseilles, is scheduled for a detention hearing on Wednesday, June 26. The case has been officially assigned to La Salle County District Judge Cynthia M. Raccuglia.

Petre’s case was originally assigned to Chief Judge H. Chris Ryan Jr., but Ryan granted the state’s request to change judges. There was no no-contest hearing on Thursday and Petre did not appear in court.

Petre was charged with first-degree murder for the strangulation death of his father, Leo Petre, on June 15. Court dates are pending.
