Could radio’s most famous seller win a Radio Wayne?

There’s a chance that Herb Tarlek had what it takes to win a Radio Wayne. Not because of his fashion sense, of course, but he could have been a contender. With a mixture of courage, creativity and hard work, he kept WKRP/Cincinnati afloat despite one bad book after another.

To land a contract with the Red Wigglers (“The Cadillac of Worms”), you have to have an open mind. You have to be a team player to work with the PD to compose the perfect, atmospheric jingle for a spot (even if it’s for a funeral home). And you have to be a brave salesperson to recognize when the product just isn’t a good fit for the network – no matter the price (again, the funeral home).

Hopefully you know a radio salesman who’s even better than Herb. One who’s better known for orders than comedic timing. (Or both.)

For 32 years, Radio Ink has recognized the best of the best in sales, marketing and management with the Radio Wayne Awards. Named after “Radio Wayne” Cornils, the awards honor Cornils’ dedication to the industry by recognizing the dedicated professionals who operate at the station and street level.

There are even categories for your station’s “big guy.”

Nominations for the Radio Wayne Awards in the following categories are open until Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT:

  • Street Fighter of the Year
