King Charles honors legendary singer, but a great moment was forgotten

The King was able to pay a significant tribute to one of his favourite musicians at Windsor Castle, but the star later admitted that she was so excited that she forgot an essential part of the royal gatherings.

King Charles named Dame Shirley Bassey as his consort of honour at a service at Windsor Castle. Dame Shirley, 87, was one of the most successful singers of the 20th and 21st centuries and is known for a number of legendary songs, including the theme songs to three James Bond films: Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever and Moonraker.

The King has long been a fan of Bassey’s work and has met her several times.

Dame Shirley then said that although she has performed for several members of the Royal Family throughout her career, it was still a tense day for her as she had made a minor slip-up. She said:I think it’s more nerve-wracking to accept the award from him than to sing in front of him… I forgot to curtsy, but that’s why I grabbed his hands because I forgot to curtsy.

The Welsh singer is now part of a small circle of members of the Order of the Companions of Honour, which has only 65 members at any given time.

King George V founded the order in 1917 specifically to honour individuals who have made significant and long-standing achievements and contributions to the fields of art, science, politics or medicine.

The royal family shared several photos on Instagram of King Charles (then Prince of Wales) and Queen Elizabeth II meeting Dame Shirley.
