Samsung union announces indefinite strike – measure could impact global supply of memory chips

Samsung Electronics union members in South Korea announced an indefinite strike on Wednesday to intensify their campaign for a wage increase – a move that could impact global chip supplies.

Key data

The National Samsung Electronics Union said the decision to go on an indefinite strike came after the company’s management failed to engage in dialogue with it during a three-day strike by some of its members, Yonhap news agency reported.

According to the union, around 6,500 of its members are currently taking part in the strike – including more than 5,000 workers from the group’s semiconductor division.

Samsung told several news agencies that the strike had not caused any disruptions so far.

On its website, the union claimed it had “clearly identified disruptions in production” and warned that the company would “regret this decision” not to engage in dialogue.

The union’s statement also said its remaining 25,000 members would not hesitate to join the strike to force the company to the negotiating table.

According to Bloomberg, the merger will initially involve a smaller chip manufacturing facility before shifting focus to Samsung’s high-bandwidth memory chip manufacturing facility in Pyeongtaek.
