LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas – A multi-day camp in Little Rock this week aims to help children learn more about water safety.

The Boys and Girls Club is partnering with the ZAC Foundation to offer swimming lessons and drowning prevention education July 9-12. Children ages 6-9 will meet at the Thrasher Boys & Girls Club in Little Rock to gain hands-on experience in water safety.

Alissa Magrum, Program Director of the ZAC Foundation, explained the main objective of the event.

“The goal is for them to improve their swimming skills and water skills and to gain water safety knowledge through the educational parts,” Magrum said.

The camp’s effort to teach children safer water use is personal to the founders of the ZAC Foundation after they lost their 6-year-old son when he drowned in their backyard pool.

Now the organization is teaching children life-saving water tips and tricks to prevent parents’ worst nightmare.

“Drowning happens quickly, silently and is preventable,” Magrum said.

The children can have fun and even meet some first responders while ensuring safety while swimming.
