Maanyung, “Don’t run away from the pain”

Maanyung, “Don’t run away from the pain”

Maanyung’s latest release gives us goosebumps.

They have been handpicked for BIGSOUND 2024, where they will showcase their talent with songs like “Don’t Run Away From Hurt”.

Maanyung’s new release mixes beautiful melodies and deep, poetic lyrics in her native language, proudly honoring her Gumbaynggirr and Yaegl roots.

Maanyung describes “Don’t Run Away From Hurt” as raw and real, exploring self-discovery and resilience in the song.

In an Instagram post, they wrote about the song: “Keep going back to her (her country), she will continue to teach you. She will give you just a glimpse, a feeling that can be quite profound. Resilience through love, through honoring our ancestors and our country. That is where our beauty lies. Keep the fire burning as always.”

“Don’t Run Away From Hurt” features a calm, maritime visualizer that matches the delicate tone of the song, which you can watch below.

This is Maanyung’s second standout release of the year, following “Bilwaali (Home)” in March. Previous singles such as “Light & Dark”, “Patterns” and “Nguura Bula” have also steadily expanded the artist’s distinctive catalogue.

Working with producers Tom and Andy Mak, Maanyung’s music combines traditional instruments such as boomerangs with modern synthesizers and electronic influences. By singing in the language of his ancestors, he preserves tradition in today’s fast-paced world.

Speaking to triple j’s Blak Out show during NAIDOC Week (watch again here), Maanyung spoke about how they can connect their language with fans: “It’s difficult to translate our words into a western context. I write music like poetry and then make songs out of it.”

Maanyung’s participation in BIGSOUND 2024, which takes place from September 3-6, underlines their presence among Australia and Aotearoa’s most promising young talent. They are no newcomer to the crowd, having previously opened for Northern Territory band Yothu Yindi.

Based on the mission to spread respect and care for ourselves, our communities and Mother Earth, the music of Maanyung invites you to find peace and connection.
