The Kiwanis Club is always thinking of ways to improve its community, and June was one of the club’s busiest months.

Kiwanis Club of Gulfport Events in June

In early June, the Gulfport Pride Festival selected the Kiwanis Club of Gulfport as one of the two beneficiaries of this year’s festival. According to the club, members attended the downtown festival and handed out rainbow pride beads and pride tattoo stickers.

Not long after, the Kiwanis Club hosted its fourth annual Juneteenth celebration with the Woodson African American Museum of Florida, with rhythmic support from the Kuumba dancers and drummers. The Juneteenth event was held on June 15 at the Gulfport Casino Ballroom.

This celebration, according to the club, included a three-hour, interactive and youth-friendly event to highlight the traditions and significance of Juneteenth.

June Awards for the Future

In addition, the Florida Kiwanis Foundation awarded the Gulfport club a $750 grant. The grant will be used for the next service project on the calendar: Duffel Bags for Foster Children.

This project encourages children to use duffel bags instead of garbage bags that they often use to hold their belongings when moving. The Kiwanis Club will invite the public to decorate approximately 25 to 30 duffel bags. After decorating, the club will donate the bags to organizations that work closely with foster children in Pinellas County.

Giving back in June

June was the month of giving back for this club.

The Kiwanis Club of Gulfport reported that it donates $250 each quarter to an organization in the Pinellas community.

Since the quarter ended on June 30, club members selected The Kind Mouse Productions, Inc. as the quarterly recipient. The Kind Mouse Productions, Inc. provides food to food-insecure children and families living in food deserts and in foster care.

Kiwanis Club of Gulfport President Diana Schwarz, Treasurer Angela Pietras and Director Cheryl Cashdollar personally presented a check and certificate to the organization in St. Petersburg.
