ArianaGrande has responded to negative comments about the changes in her speaking voice, saying that these are natural for singers, especially those with a wide vocal range.

“I just spent a lot of time playing a character every day,” she said in an interview on the Shut up, Evan Podcast with Evan Ross Katz on July 9th about her role (Glinda) in the upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical Evil.

“(I) trained my voice to do different things for a long time before I left for London and before all this happened. Muscle memory is a real thing,” she continued.

Ariana further told the public that her vocal changes were the result of her “full-time commitment” to her vocal health.

“(It’s) a full-time commitment and a lifestyle. It’s not something you can mess around with,” she said.

She added: “It’s your lifeline, it’s your tool and it’s something you can take out of a box and put back. That’s what we have to think about 24/7.”

The No more tears to cry The singer also spoke about how male actors are treated differently if they accidentally stay in character after filming.

“Sure, people make jokes here and there, but afterward, it’s always, ‘Oh wow, how dedicated he is to his craft! What an incredible transformation! He’s a brilliant artist!'” she said. “But then, God forbid, I sneeze like Glinda.”

The 31-year-old Grammy Award winner has faced criticism for drastic changes to her voice. Last month, she explained that she intentionally changes her voice to maintain her vocal health and overcome any vocal habits.

“I often intentionally change my vocal pitch (high/low) depending on how much I sing,” she wrote in the comment section of a TikTok video. “I’ve always done that, BYE.”

Ariana is selected to represent Glinda, also known as the Good Witch of the South, in the highly anticipated film adaptation of EvilAt her side is Cynthia Erivo, who will play Elphaba, the complex and misunderstood Wicked Witch of the West.

Also in the cast are Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, the royal headmistress of Shiz University, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, a mischievous and carefree prince, Ethan Slater as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student, and Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.

Under the direction of Crazy Rich Asians Director Jon M. Chu, Wicked: Part One will be in theaters on November 27th. Wicked: Part Two is scheduled to hit theaters in 2025.
